Quarter-zip or full-zip, in a color nobody would choose on purpose. Fleece went mainstream in the ’90s and outdoor brands made it to survive, which is why ’90s fleeces are still in circulation. fleece is a neutral.

Nylon, hooded, with too many pockets and a color-blocked panel. The ’90s outdoor catalog look, made from fabrics that were meant to be rained on for thirty years. the uglier the colorway, the better.

The Trail Sandal or Boot
Strappy sport sandals, hiking boots, and trail runners in colors from a topographic map. Built for terrain, worn on sidewalks. socks with the sandals. non-negotiable.

How to Wear It
One Technical Piece Per Outfit
A fleece with jeans, a shell over a dress. Head-to-toe gear is a hike, not a look.
Cinch Something
A drawstring at the hem, a strap on the bag, a belt on the shell. The look is about adjustable and utilitarian.
Embrace the Ugly Color
Purple and teal fleece, orange nylon. Gorpcore does not do tasteful. The wrong color is the right color.
Socks Are Visible
Wool socks with sandals, tall socks with shorts. The sock is an accessory here.
Where to Find It
The Hunting Grounds
The men’s outerwear rack. ’90s fleeces and shells hide here in every size. Look for outdoor brand labels and color blocking.
The activewear section. Sport sandals, trail runners, and nylon shorts, usually priced like gym clothes.
Estate sales, the garage. Backpacks, hiking gear, and wool socks are in the garage, not the closet.
