Dark academia looks like it takes a whole wardrobe. It really runs on about a dozen pieces worn in the same few combinations, over and over, which is exactly how the professors it borrows from got dressed.

So here are seven formulas: three or four pieces each, a fall version, and the one swap that carries it into winter. Learn the formula once and every secondhand find slots straight into it. If you want finished looks rather than formulas, the dark academia outfits for fall and winter guide has eight of them.

Keep an eye on the sweater at number seven. It quietly works with five of the other formulas.

Brown Shetland crewneck, charcoal wool trousers, penny loafers

This is the base formula, the one everything else riffs on, and the one the how to thrift dark academia outfits guide builds its fabric checks around. A brown Shetland crewneck, charcoal wool trousers with a straight or slightly wide leg, and brown penny loafers. Keep all three pieces in the same muted family and it reads like you have a seminar at ten.

The tell: Shetland wool has a slightly hairy, dry hand and a little scratch to it, and that is the point.

  • The tag. Look for “100% Shetland wool” or “Made in Scotland” on the label.
  • The shoulder. A saddle shoulder, where the sleeve runs in a strip up to the neck, is a classic Shetland construction.
  • Price. $20 to $45 for the sweater, $15 to $35 for wool trousers.

For winter, add a long wool scarf in a muted plaid. Nothing else changes.

Tartan wool kilt, black merino turtleneck, black tights, Mary Janes

The most photographed formula in the whole aesthetic, and for good reason. A tartan wool kilt in forest green or navy, a fine black merino turtleneck tucked in, black tights, and black Mary Janes.

The tell: A real kilt skirt wraps. You’ll see leather straps and buckles at the hip, a fringed edge on the overlap panel, and pleats stitched down through the hip before they open. The wool should feel heavy in the hand. If it zips up the back and the plaid is printed, you have a pleated skirt. Both are wearable, but the woven wraparound is the one that holds its shape for years. Expect $25 to $60.

The turtleneck is the easy part. Fine gauge, 100% merino, $15 to $30.

For winter, swap sheer tights for opaque ribbed ones and add a black wool coat over the top.

Forest green cardigan, brown wool midi skirt, oxfords

Button the cardigan all the way up and wear it as the top. That single choice is what gives the formula its library feel. A forest green wool cardigan, a brown A-line wool midi skirt, and brown oxfords with thin socks showing.

The tell: Turn the cardigan inside out at the armhole. Little raised marks where the knit narrows mean it was fully fashioned, knitted to shape rather than cut from a flat piece, and that’s a quality knit. Real horn, leather, or metal buttons are the second good sign.

The skirt is where secondhand really shines. Heritage wool skirts with a “100% virgin wool” tag turn up constantly, usually lined, usually $20 to $40, and they outlast almost anything made now.

For winter, add a cream collared blouse under the cardigan with the collar pulled out.

Black wool blazer, ivory tee, dark straight jeans

The casual formula, and the one you’ll wear most. A black wool blazer, a plain ivory tee, dark rinse straight jeans, and white canvas sneakers. It’s dark academia on a Saturday, when the library is closed and you’re going for coffee anyway.

The tell: Shoulders first, always. A blazer that fits at the shoulder can be taken in anywhere else, but a shoulder that is wrong stays wrong. After that, check the fiber line for a wool shell with a full lining, which keeps it hanging cleanly over a tee. A black wool blazer runs $25 to $50.

The jeans want to be rigid, 100% cotton, in a deep indigo with no fading. The darker the rinse, the dressier the whole formula reads.

For winter, swap the tee for a thin black turtleneck and the sneakers for loafers.

Oxblood knit polo, camel wide-leg trousers, Dr. Martens

A knit polo is a collared sweater, and it’s the most underused piece in the aesthetic. Oxblood knit polo tucked into camel wide-leg wool trousers with a front pleat, finished with black Dr. Martens oxfords. Tuck the polo all the way in so the trouser pleat can do its job.

The tell: The collar should be knitted in and lie flat on its own. A collar that curls or looks sewn on after the fact is the cheaper version. Merino or a cotton and wool blend is the goal, usually $20 to $40.

  • The trousers. Wool gabardine or wool flannel, a single or double pleat, lined at least to the knee.
  • The shoes. Standard Dr. Martens run $40 to $80 secondhand. The pricier “Made in England” line is lovely, but the standard pair does this job fine.

For winter, layer a brown tweed waistcoat over the polo, buttoned.

Charcoal sweater dress, brown leather belt, textured tights

The one-piece formula, for mornings when you have no opinions. A charcoal knit sweater dress, a slim brown leather belt at the natural waist, dark textured tights, and black ballet flats. The belt is doing a lot here. It turns a cozy knit into something with shape.

The tell: Read the fiber line before anything else. Wool or a wool blend holds its shape through the seat and hem. All-acrylic pills fast and stretches where you sit. A blend with at least 30 percent wool is a fair trade at a good price. Expect $20 to $45.

If your taste leans softer, this is the formula that bridges into romantic academia outfits with a lace collar or a cameo at the neck.

For winter, add a long camel wool coat and swap the flats for knee-high boots.

Cream cricket sweater, navy pleated trousers, brown loafers

Here’s the sweater from the intro. A cream cable knit cricket sweater, the V-neck kind with contrast stripes at the neck, cuffs, and hem, over navy pleated wool trousers and brown loafers. It’s the most collegiate formula of the seven.

It also works with the charcoal trousers, the tartan kilt, the brown midi skirt, the dark jeans, and the camel trousers. If you only hunt one piece this season, make it this one.

The tell: The stripes should be knitted in, usually navy and burgundy or green and navy. Heavier cotton and wool versions from school uniforms turn up secondhand at $25 to $50. For the trousers, the measurement that matters is the inseam, since a pleated trouser needs enough length to break softly over the shoe.

For winter, swap the loafers for oxfords and add a navy wool coat.

The short version

Seven formulas, about a dozen core pieces, and a winter swap for each. Start with the cricket sweater and one pair of wool trousers, then add from there. Every formula here, and more like them, lives in the Academia category.

Then let the wool do the talking.
