Grandma / Grandpa is quiet confidence inherited from people who kept things: shawl-collar cardigans and pleated trousers from his side of the closet, floral house dresses and good brooches from hers. The menswear aisle and the granny rack are the two richest, cheapest sections in any thrift store, and this look owns them both.

The Quilt Coat
Cotton patchwork, hand-quilted, usually cut from a blanket somebody could not bring themselves to throw out. Quilts became coats in the ’70s craft revival and every time since that someone inherited one, so they turn up alone and never twice. buy it when you see it.

The Pleated Trouser
High-rise, double pleat, cuffed hem, in wool or cotton twill. Standard menswear from the ’40s through the ’90s, cut generously enough that a woman can wear a men’s 30 with a belt. the pleats are the point. do not iron them out.

The Floral House Dress
Cotton, snap or button front, pockets deep enough for a paperback. The uniform of women who kept a garden and an opinion. It hides on the nightgown rack and under “casual dresses,” priced like pajamas. worn with intent it is a dress. intent is a belt and good shoes.

How to Wear It
Oversized, Then Cinched
The cardigan, the trousers, and the house dress all run big by design; a belt at the waist keeps a silhouette. Baggy without a waist is pajamas.
Textures Over Colors
Tweed, corduroy, worn cotton, hand knits. Keep the palette brown, grey, camel, and faded floral; let the fabrics talk.
One Side at a Time
Lead with his closet or hers, not both at full volume. A house dress with loafers, or pleated trousers with a brooch. Fifty-fifty reads as costume.
Her Jewelry Finishes It
A brooch, clip-on earrings, a silk scarf knotted at the neck. The jewelry bin costs a quarter and does what a new accessory wall cannot.

The Hunting Grounds
The men’s sweater and trouser racks. Shawl collars, cable knits, pleated wool. Sized generously; go for a men’s medium and the highest rise on the rack.
The nightgown and housecoat rack. Floral house dresses and quilted robes hide here, priced like pajamas because the store thinks they are.
The jewelry bin and scarf basket. Brooches, clip-ons, silk squares. Almost all of it under five dollars, almost none of it looked at twice.
