Floppy felt in winter, straw in summer, with a brim wide enough to be a decision. It came off the ’70s festival circuit, Stevie Nicks made it permanent, and it has been sitting unsold in the hat aisle ever since. wool felt holds its shape. acrylic never did.

Vests, cardigans, and dresses in open crochet, often handmade. Every thrift store has a rack of donated crochet that nobody prices correctly. if the holes are big enough to see through, it is right.

Loose, embroidered, gathered at the neckline, in cotton or gauze. Imported from Mexico and India in the ’70s and copied by every mall brand in the ’00s. the embroidered ones are worth the extra dollar.

How to Wear It
Long Over Long
A maxi skirt with a long cardigan. A duster over wide trousers. Boho is about length and drape; short pieces break the line.
Real Materials Only
Suede, cotton, wool, leather. Poly fringe reads as a Halloween aisle. The whole look depends on texture.
Earth Tones, Then One Color
Rust, brown, cream, olive, and then a single jewel tone. Rainbow boho is a costume; edited boho is a wardrobe.
A Boot With Height
A block-heel boot or a platform sandal keeps the long layers from swallowing you. Flat sandals only if you are tall.

The Hunting Grounds
The maxi rack. Long skirts and dresses in cotton and rayon. Look for ’70s labels and Indian block prints.
The outerwear rack, suede section. Fringed vests and jackets are often mislabeled as costume. Check for real leather.
